LUJAN DE CUYO - MENDOZA

After nearly 100 harvests of the VIÑA 1924 Vineyard selling grapes to some of the most outstanding and exclusive wineries of Mendoza, they started building their winery in early December 2006. In April 2007 VIÑA 1924 DE ANGELES WINERY harvested the first grapes for their own wine and discovered in their malbec the individuality and originality they always believed would be there.

This is a true garage winery designed for the artisanal creation of wines to express this old, original and traditional malbec vineyard in the Vistalba Valley. The wines are intense and distinguished with pure varietal expression, typical of the grapes from this vineyard, reaching an exceptional expression full of great aromatic and flavor concentration, provided by this treasured plot of land. The winery is equipped with state-of the art technology and limited to a production of 20,000 bottles per harvest. This small winery is located at the foot of the vineyard.

The wines are 100% Estate Grapes coming from this single vineyard and 100% Estate Bottled. The winemaker is Juan Manuel González with the consultation of Eno-Rolland. The other important person is Alberto Comarín, the vineyard manager of the VIÑA 1924 Vineyard; he has been managing the vineyard for almost 40 years.

Size of vineyard: the entire vineyard is 50 acres however all the grapes for these wines come the best parcel, #3.

VITICULTURE
Original vine material was brought from France to form this malbec vineyard. VIÑA 1924 is an ancient vineyard, more than 80 years of age; a traditional vineyard which corresponds to the very origins of the viticulture of the Vistalba viticultural region. For decades they have followed a soil treatment practice that consists in mixing the pruning and the vine shoots with the soil; this practice maintains and improves the soil texture and composition over time; they also strictly maintain the vine labor practices used decades ago, the vines are managed to preserve tradition and resources, identifying and observing their own times and natural expressions which characterize the unique and genuine personality of this vineyard and its terroir. Alberto Comarín is a specialist in this management style. Alberto seriously jokes that the vines speak to him (they hope he is joking).
Plant density: at least 7.000 vines per hectare. This high plant density gives fewer clusters per plant, which results in more concentrated aromas and flavors. This high plant density actually has a natural origin that developed slowly over the years: each time a vine was lost that vine position was renewed and replanted using one of the vine shoots from its neighboring vine but due to the limited length of the vine shoot the distance between vines became shorter and shorter and the plant density increased.
Soil type: the vineyard soil is formed by the alluvional deposit of materials that came from an old lost river that years ago limited the vineyard; the soil is not very deep, it is sandy loam and very permeable, this type of soil allows roots to reach depths of 20 feet.
Trellising System: It is grown on low espaliers (low vines), pruned according to double Guyot, an old traditional French pruning system imported a century ago form the Bordeaux region.
The region is at 3,200 feet above sea level giving a thermal amplitude between day and night of nearly 30°F. In the particular case of the VIÑA 1924 Vineyard the depth of an old lost river that years ago limited the vineyard provides an additional air current flow during nights making the night temperature even lower thus increasing the diurnal difference.
Orientation of the rows: The rows are placed from North to South receiving higher sloar exposure during the morning and afternoon, and less at noon, avoiding radiation on the clusters during the hours of highest temperatures.
Average yearly rainfall is 180 millimeters spread throughout the summer months, giving a dry climate in a cool area.
The vineyard has traditional furrow irrigation made with high quality water coming form Mendoza River.
The ripening period in lasts up to 65 days, this is a great long ripening period that allows the grapes to continue develop mature tannins, anthocyanins, flavors and aromas.
The 1924 vines are grown on natural rootstock, this is only possible because the Vistalba climate, soil and irrigation made the region free of devastating phylloxera.

Farming practices: sustainable - Vina 1924 would be organic except for the dose of glifosate they use in some years. They are looking into converting to fully organic. The wines are not fined and vegan friendly.

HARVEST: The harvest time Is organoleptically determined, and is carried out in April, by hand, and using shears and 18 kg boxes.

VINIFICATION: Vinification is begun with a manual inspection and selection of grape clusters, destemming, manual inspection and selection of berries, filling into tanks through conveyor belts so as to ensure the berries arrive undamaged. Small stainless steel tanks, 100, 65, 40, 35 and 15 hL capacity and automatic temperature control.

FERMENTATION PROCESS: Pellicular maceration at 8°C for 6-7 days, alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts for 19 days between 24° and 26° C with pump over methods, post fermentative maceration for 15 days, natural malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels.
