In 1988, Michel and Isabelle Dietrich bought Château Haut-Rian, after living for 6 years in Clare Valley, Australia - Michel was the manager and head winemaker at Château Remy. Both of them come from winemaking families: Michel grew up in Kaysersberg, Alsace, and his wife Isabelle in the Montagne de Reims area in Champagne. Michel earned his viticulture and oenology degrees at the Collège de Beaune and the University of Bordeaux. Their property is located 18 miles southeast of the city of Bordeaux, in the tiny village of Rions. The vineyards spread over eighty hectares encompassing parts of Premières Côtes de Bordeaux and Entre-Deux-Mers, bordering the village of Cadillac and near the Garonne River, ”where the vines can see the water but won’t get their feet wet”. The climate there is warmer than the maritime Médoc, but also drier. All of the vineyards are on gentle slopes facing south and southeast, and the topsoil consists of loose pebbles over limestone. |

Bordeaux Blanc |
This wine come from near the village of Soulignac. The general planting ratio is two thirds old vine Semillon and one third Sauvignon-Blanc. All grapes are harvested in the cool mornings and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wines are bottled after about six months aging. Chateau Haut-Rian is always seductive and brilliant; green-gold tinged with an aromatic fresh nose of newly cut hay, grapefruit and minerals. In the mouth it is extremely well-balanced and has a lingering finish. Ideal as an aperitif, but works equally well with fish or bivalves. "This delightful dry white wine is meant to be drunk young, cool and fresh. It delivers striking scents of lime and lemon rind, whiffs of honeydew and even a hint of seashells. And no taste of oak to be found, just “pure play” dry white. If there’s a better dry white wine for the (little) money, I haven’t tasted it. I’ve tasted a good many dry whites at twice this price that aren’t even half as good. This wine could easily become your “house white”- it’s that good." - Matt Kramer |
Bordeaux Rosé |
This rich and charming rosé is a blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown on clay-limestone soils. Half of the harvest goes through a 18 hour cold-maceration before being pressed. The other half goes straight to a pneumatic press. After the musts are racked, the blend is assembled and fermented at cool temperature. Bright color and fresh aromas of red currants, strawberries, licorice root and spices. Round and savory on the palate, fresh, fruit-filled finish. |
